Writing for the 7PH Website

  • by

Passionate about 7PH? Itching to share your thoughts? Want some exposure and recognition?

As some of you may have read, I am looking to increase and improve the content flow on this site. To that end, I believe that establishing a new content pipeline that involves the active players and members of the community will be a great foundational step! Here are some simple and handy guidelines for what we’re looking for and what we can provide!

General advice and guidelines

Writing for the 7PH website is not for everyone. However, in an effort to keep the content appropriate for readers while not detracting from your piece, here are some general guidelines applicable to all forms of content.

Submission Process

1. Join the 7PH Discord server here. Write a summary of your idea and your proposed article structure and submit via a DM to Voltie for approval.
2. Write a basic draft with headers and submit for a green light from the editor.
3. Write the article! A final draft may be expected or requested, but in some cases will be skipped.
4. The editor will transcribe the article to the 7PH website.
5. You will be provided screenshots of what the article will actually look like on the site, with an opportunity provided for any notes or requests.
6. Some basic information will be requested prior to the first publishing of your work to create an Author Bio to attach to your work. Subsequent pieces will not need this information again.

Submission Guidelines

Articles should be written in full with a general presentation flow you would expect to be translated to the website page. The editor will transcribe it to the website’s WordPress and will strive to maintain artistic integrity.

Creating the document in GoogleDocs will simplify the process and is recommended.

Writing Style

The 7PH website articles have a wide audience and as such require a simplified writing style. Please don’t submit a complete 30,000 word thesis.

– Avoid writing with an assumed knowledge base within your audience.
– Avoid using a lot of jargon.
– Ensure that your writing style and voice remain consistent within the piece.
– Provide balance and nuance as needed. There are likely multiple aspects and views on any particular subject, and discussing alternative perspectives will enhance your writing.
– Be informative! Your articles should not be read as a personal blog post. Provide context, explain concepts and teach your readers.

Media

If you are referencing a deck list, take a cropped snip using Moxfield or a similar deckbuilding tool.
If you are using an image of a card for context, use the image file from Scryfall.
Alternatively, provide information about what needs to be added to the article and the editor will input it for you.

Types of Articles

Deck Primer

If you would like to write about a particular deck list or deck archetype you have been finding success with or enjoying, this could be your calling!

You should ensure that:
– You provide recent tournament results the deck has had. This can span multiple pilots and events.
– You provide a current, stock deck list for the deck. This can be an image or link using Moxfield or a similar deckbuilding tool.
– You provide an image or link to any previous iterations of the deck you mention.
– You keep general concepts that are vaguely connected to the primer concise.
– You provide the reader about niche concepts related to the primer with facts and relevant information.
– You connect with other pilots of the archetype who have been historically tied to the deck. This will combine the multiple voices associated with the deck’s creation and ensure the primer is accurate.

Tournament Report

If you have had recent tournament success and would like to write about it, this may be the style for you. Generally, tournament reports will be accepted on a case-by-case basis, based on the size of event and the result you achieved. Don’t be dissuaded, however, and feel free to pitch your piece if you believe it would be a good read!

You should ensure that:
– You provide information about the event. This should include a player count, the name of the event, the number of rounds etc.
– Avoid writing a full deck primer for your deck list. A small summary of the archetype is fine.
– Write about individual card choices if they differ from the common card choices of the archetype.
– Write about your matches! We want to read about what you played against, who you played against if appropriate, and how your matches went!
– Attempt to provide general tournament information as appropriate. This could include a metagame breakdown or a summary of the Top 8 deck lists if possible. This is not a requirement.
– Provide an informative conclusion about the tournament and how it went. If you won the whole thing and wouldn’t change a single card given the chance to start the day over, we still want to know!

Educational Resource

If you plan on writing an educational piece targeted at new players entering the format, these will be your guidelines. If you are writing a piece that you believe would improve the overall skillset of the community, make clear that this is your goal.

You should ensure that:
– You summarise the concept you are teaching about concisely and accurately.
– You provide all relevant context connected to the concept.
– You provide all relevant media (images and deck lists) within your piece.
– Your writing style is appropriate for a wider audience. Minimise your use of uncommon jargon and avoid writing with an assumed knowledge base within your readers.
– Avoid personal opinions, or disclaim them as needed. Your article should be informative and factual.

Opinion Piece

If you would like to write about your opinions on a particular aspect of the 7PH format, this will be the style for you.

You should ensure that:
– You summarise the concept you are expressing an opinion on. Keep this section brief and factual.
– Your voice reflects your opinions accurately. Please ensure you are separating personal and community sentiments.
– You do not frame personal opinions as facts.
– You research and can provide evidence of facts you reference.
– You keep it light-hearted and positive. Significantly negative words or ideas are unlikely to be approved.

I look forward to connecting with you all in this project, and I’m very excited to read people’s work! If you have any questions, please direct them to Voltie.
