SA: Store Championship Dragon’s Lair Salisbury, Adelaide (14 Players) 09/01/2021 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

Tournament Report by Torin Kelderman During the end of 2020 both Dragon’s Lair stores in Adelaide held a series of events that gained points towards a top eight, who would then battle it out on January 9th to be selected as the Highlander representative for the team event between the two Dragon’s Lair stores (on the January 10th). The top eight was single elimination with the higher seed picking play/draw. I went to the event with my usual Jund midrange list (see below for the list). Click here to read the parallel tournament report from the other store. My experience… Read More »SA: Store Championship Dragon’s Lair Salisbury, Adelaide (14 Players) 09/01/2021 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

SA: Dragon’s Lair Adelaide (16 Players) 27/12/2020 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

Metagame The entire field ran the full gamut of Control, Midrange, Combo, Ramp, Aggro, and Tempo decks. However the archetypes that rose to the top were predominantly Midrange (4 decks) and Control (3 decks). The last archetype in the Top 8 was an Elves deck, which operated predominantly as a Combo deck (with Ramp elements). There were only 2 pieces of Power in the Top 8, continuing the trend of un-Powered decks matching up well vs. Ancestral Recall or Time Walk. The Winning Deck(s) Yet again, Bant Midrange continues its clean sweep of the SA metagame. Both Beckett and I… Read More »SA: Dragon’s Lair Adelaide (16 Players) 27/12/2020 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

SA: Good Games Adelaide (18 Players) 20/12/2020 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

The Metagame This 18 player event had a diverse metagame of control, midrange, tempo, aggro, and ramp. Combo was under-represented but this is pretty normal for Adelaide metro events (whereas our satellite city areas like Salisbury see a lot of Infect, Reanimator, and other combo decks). In terms of the Top 8 decks, Bant is clearly the new hotness, with 4 of the decks being GWU shells (two of which splashed a 4th colour; black or red). More importantly, it is important to mention that the Top 8 was filled with Birthing Pod… 5/8 decks running the oft-forgotten 1-Point card!… Read More »SA: Good Games Adelaide (18 Players) 20/12/2020 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

SA: Dragon’s Lair Adelaide (14 Players) 06/12/2020 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

This event marked the third straight event Junk placed 1st in in Adelaide, despite the deck underperforming in other regions and the increasingly popular webcam meta, it seems to be almost a silver bullet to most decks that are seen in Adelaide. Steve and I have already talked about the deck in our previous tournament reports (Junk 1st place October; Junk 1st place November), so in this one I wanted to focus more on which cards shone in specific matchups and focus some attention on the sideboard as well. MVP cards: This event the old guard shone, Tarmogoyf, Deathrite Shaman,… Read More »SA: Dragon’s Lair Adelaide (14 Players) 06/12/2020 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

SA: Dragon’s Lair Adelaide (14 Players) 07/11/2020 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

Tournament Report by the Winner: Steve Lowe (Abzan “Junk” Midrange) Some of this report is honestly going to be borrowed from the previous (see Raj’s win with Junk last week!), as I was far too lazy getting a deck together for this event and Rajdeep Tokhi was kind enough to lend me his deck for me to play (the list is identical to his win at Good Games on 31st Oct). In a 14 player event, I didn’t have the highest of hopes as I had only once very briefly looked over the decklist, but had never actually picked up… Read More »SA: Dragon’s Lair Adelaide (14 Players) 07/11/2020 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

SA: Good Games Adelaide (17 Players) 31/10/2020 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

Tournament Report by the Winner: Rajdeep Tokhi (Abzan “Junk” Midrange) Metagame: 17 players turned up for the GG Adelaide 7ph monthly! As is usual for Adelaide, the event had a wide variety of decks. With midrange being the most common having 8 representative decks, Tempo decks such as Hootie and the BUG fish, Nono Blue and 4c Ninjas(!) were seen. Thassa’s oracle decks were also present in the form of Esper Combo-Control and Soc’s signature Cephalid Brunch. Control is becoming less and less popular in Adelaide, however, Drew still planted the control archetype flag in the top 8 with his… Read More »SA: Good Games Adelaide (17 Players) 31/10/2020 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

SA: Dragon’s Lair Adelaide (16 Players) 24/10/2020 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

This week’s Highlander event in SA was won by Sarven McLinton on a revival of his old Sultai Tempo deck, “Hootie and the BUG Fish” from about 3 years ago. This tournament report contains the Top 8 lists, a brief discussion of the overall metagame, and some info and resources on the winning list. You can also scroll to the bottom for just the decklists and standings. The Metagame Whilst some of the Top 8 competitors such as Raj (4th) and Diogo (8th) had the joys of playing against a diverse range of combo, aggro, control, and midrange decks, others… Read More »SA: Dragon’s Lair Adelaide (16 Players) 24/10/2020 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

SA: Dragon’s Lair Adelaide (16 Players) 27/09/20 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

This month’s Highlander event at Dragon’s Lair took place in the new storefront in St Mary’s, South Australia saw 16 players! After the recent Zendikar Rising points announcement there was a distinct difference in colours played in the Adelaide meta, namely fewer Wrenn and Sixes (GR) overall. There was a noticeable uptick in Black decks, in particular Esper, Sultai, and Jund making a great turnout in the Top 8! However, this did not stop the RUG decks from rising to the top… in fact the finals of the event were the very two RUG decks in the event (an insane… Read More »SA: Dragon’s Lair Adelaide (16 Players) 27/09/20 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

SA: Good Games Adelaide (20 Players) | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

This was the last SA event pre-Zendikar Points Announcement and we had 20 players jamming Highlander at the Good Games Adelaide store. Although the whole metagame was actually very diverse, there was still a clear trend in the Top 8 conversion: 3 RUG Tempo or Tempo-hybrid decks and 2 Thoracle combo decks made up 5/8. The remaining decks were unique though: Mardu Midrange, Jund Midrange, and Esper Control! Safe to say there were a lot of Wrenn and Sixes and Mystic Sanctuaries on the day. Ultimately, Raj took down the event with his innovative take on jamming the best things… Read More »SA: Good Games Adelaide (20 Players) | Deck Lists & Tournament Report
