Crimson Vow

Points Announcement: Innistrad: Crimson Vow

Thassa’s Oracle (+1 to 4 Points) Since it’s printing Thassa’s Oracle has quickly risen to the top as one of the best combo decks of the format. The combo itself, outside of targeted discard and counter magic, is difficult to interact with. We acknowledge that due to the prevalence of this combo, players have come up with creative ways outside of counter magic to interact with the combo. We believe this card is one of the best win conditions in combo decks – Best flash hulk, best hermit druid, best breach win con etc. We held off pointing this package… Read More »Points Announcement: Innistrad: Crimson Vow

QLD: Toowoomba 7-Point Highlander – Competitive REL 14/08/2021 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

Wow! Thanks to two of our local judges we were still able to fire this event narrowly dodging the greater Brisbane lock down. Tyrone Phillips and Ryan Kruger worked tirelessly through all of the 5 rounds of swiss and the top 8 with Eventlink down (Challonge and spread sheets for tiebreakers). We can’t thank you enough for making this tournament happen!  Congratulations to the top 8 players. Yet again we see the experienced out of towners crushing these events. Brisbane put 7/8 players into the top seats. Lets look at the final results and the decks that made it through… Read More »QLD: Toowoomba 7-Point Highlander – Competitive REL 14/08/2021 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

QLD: Toowoomba 7-Point Highlander – Competitive REL (25 players) 15/05/2021 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

First off a big thank you to our two fantastic Judges – Tyrone Philips and Josh Bonser for running a very smooth event. A big thank you to the heap of players that travelled for this event. We had 25 players battling it out for cash prizes over 5 rounds of swiss and a cut to top 8. Congratulations to all our Top 8 players! The top 4 players decided to split the prizes and play for glory and the basic land in the last 2 rounds of event. Congratulations to Aaron and Cameron (Brisbane vs Toowoomba respectively) who made the finals.  Aaron Uniacke on… Read More »QLD: Toowoomba 7-Point Highlander – Competitive REL (25 players) 15/05/2021 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

Stirxhaven

Points Announcement: Strixhaven

The committee has been keeping a close eye on a number of decks over the last few months. This points update is a conservative one and includes a change to the watch list. We have access to more and more data from players and TO’s using the point and deck list portals. However, we still only have half of the picture as some states are less diligent in reporting deck lists and tournament results. While we never solely rely on the data it helps form a better picture and adds another level of analysis for the committee in addition to… Read More »Points Announcement: Strixhaven

7 Point Highlander Jund 2021

Deck Primer: Jund (Value Midrange) in Highlander

Welcome to a deck primer on Jund Midrange in 7 Point Highlander! In this article we will take a deep dive into Jund, which is a representative of the Value Midrange Archetype in Highlander. *** Disclaimer: This deck is designed to take advantage of a midrange and aggro meta. If control or combo are both high percentages of your meta maybe look at playing a tempo deck like Sophie Pezzutto’s RUG Sprowess. We will cover current card choices, alternate card choices and reasons for not including key cards like entomb and Life from the Loam which can be found in… Read More »Deck Primer: Jund (Value Midrange) in Highlander

QLD: Toowoomba 7-Point Fortnightly Highlander (13players) 16/02/2021 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

In preparation for the upcoming Competitive REL event we held a few extra 7 point highlander tournaments over the last month. Just some good old fashioned midrange showed up to play this week. Noted this kind of meta should be a field day for Thoracle and other combo decks like UWR Breach. A few of our players have some very creative ways to fight the combos of both of those decks but we will see how their far those silver bullets can get them this Saturday. Congratuations Ben Nielsen for winning this event with a 4-0 finish he has been… Read More »QLD: Toowoomba 7-Point Fortnightly Highlander (13players) 16/02/2021 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

QLD: Toowoomba 7-Point (Proxy) Highlander (16 Players) 02/02/2021 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

After the big points update at the end of January we sleeved up some proxy cards to test out for the upcoming event COMP REL event in Feb. The pointing of Acall to 5 and Oko to 2 meant a lot of players just simply cut Oko altogether, others chose to push out True-Name Nemesis and some changed colour combinations entirely. Really keen to see the results of the Brisbane vs Gold Coast vs Toowoomba on the 20th of February. *Jimbo Deenie was back at it again with his 200+ card Battle of Wits deck (featuring a proxied name sake).… Read More »QLD: Toowoomba 7-Point (Proxy) Highlander (16 Players) 02/02/2021 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

Points Announcement: Kaldheim

Magic has been experiencing a lot of ups and downs lately and some formats are feeling it more than others. We are trying our best to keep this format healthy and fun for new and existing players alike. Oko, Thief of Crowns is now 2 Points. (from 1 to 2) To improve the health of the format we aim to tax UGx decks, and 4c Midrange decks containing Oko. He has been referred to an “army in a can” and has seen a lot of play even in combo decks like Thoracle and Time vault. Appearing in 29% of the top… Read More »Points Announcement: Kaldheim

QLD: Toowoomba 7-Point Fortnightly Highlander (14 players) 26/01/2021 | Deck Lists & Tournament Report

What a way to finish Australia Day than to play our favourite format. This non-proxy event’s top 8 decks had a even spread of archetypes – 3 combo decks, 2 control decks, 3 aggro decks, 2 tempo decks and a splash of midrange that blead into other strategies. Only one piece of power in the top 8 in Ancestral Recall.
